What is Code Joshua?
Code Joshua represents an official partnership with Joshua's Gift to create a special needs registry at the Fremont Police Department (FPD) to better serve our autistic community. Joshua’s Gift developed “Code Joshua,” a call for emergency assistance while also alerting law enforcement to approach with caution and sensitivity.
A special needs registry serves community members who may require additional assistance before, during or after an emergency. This list comprises of voluntary submissions provided by community members and can assist law enforcement resolve emergencies more effectively. The neurodiverse community includes those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Because of the multifaceted role of policing, autistic community members may interact with police for a multitude of reasons which could be based on elopement, victimization, or perceived aggressive behavior.
Joshua’s Gift is a Fremont-based non-profit organization whose mission is to serve and support the social, mental, emotional, and economic needs of families living with autism. Founders Mizpah Brown-Rich and Kerry Rich work throughout the Bay Area providing training to law enforcement agencies about individuals with developmental disabilities and strategies to facilitate a safe, impactful outcome during calls for service.
