The Police Explorer Program will be accepting new applications on March 15-April 15, 2024.

Explorer Applicants need to attend an explorer academy from July 8 – July 19, 2024.

The Explorer Program is a fun and safe way for teenagers, 14-18 years of age, to learn about the field of law enforcement. Explorers participate in various activities such as community events, ride-alongs, traffic control, building tours and school visits. In addition, Explorers are required to attend weekly meetings at the Police Department. This program gives teens an understanding of various law enforcement careers and helps them decide whether or not to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Becoming an Explorer

If you are interested in applying for the Fremont Police Explorer Post, the following four documents must be submitted in order for your application to be considered. If you are submitting the Online Forms (#3 and #4 below) via our website, you do not need to submit the PDF forms (#5 and #6 below).  If you are unable to complete the online forms, please print and mail the completed PDFs along with other needed documents. 

  1. A one page essay on why you want to be considered for this program.
  2. A Copy of your most recent report card.
  3. A completed Teen Volunteer Application (Online)
  4. A Completed Explorer (Supplemental) Application (Online)
  5. A Completed Teen Volunteer Application (PDF)
  6. A Completed Supplemental Application (PDF) 

Failure to submit one or more of the required documents will disqualify you from moving forward.

Application Process

  • Next, an Explorer staff member will review your application packet to determine if you meet the minimum criteria.
  • If you meet the minimum criteria, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.
  • Upon successful completion of the interview, you will then be invited to participate in a background investigation. (The background investigation generally takes about 1-2 months and you will be notified of the results by phone, email, or mail).
  • If you are not accepted into the Post, you are invited to reapply after one year.
  • For those accepted into the post, attendance at the first three meetings is mandatory.
  • After the first three meetings, you will officially be a probationary Explorer.
  • All Explorers are required to attend a one-week Explorer Academy in San Diego their first summer as an Explorer (Typically held during the end of July or early August).
  • You must complete a four to six month Field Training program which will give you the knowledge and training you need in order to be an Explorer.
  • Upon passing the Field Training final, you will be a full-fledged Police Explorer.
  • The Fremont Police Explorer Post has zero tolerance for bullying, sexual harassment and discrimination.

Minimum Qualifications

  • You must be at least 14, but no older than 18 years old (at the time of appointment).
  • You must have an interest in law enforcement and show an interest in learning.
  • You must currently be enrolled in high school, have a high school diploma, or GED.
  • You must maintain a C+ (2.5) grade point average to participate as an Explorer. Report cards must be turned in at the end of each school term.
  • You must demonstrate a good level of responsibility and maturity. A record of criminal violations may be grounds for disqualification from our post.
  • No school disciplinary actions in the last year such as, but not limited to: theft, bullying, sexual harassment, violence, or threatening behavior.
  • The Fremont Police Explorer Post has weekly meetings and physical training that you must attend regularly.

The Fremont Police Explorer Post #119 is part of a department wide Tradition of Excellence. We strive to maintain a professional post. At the same time, our post is a melting pot of different people who share an interest in law enforcement. The Police Explorer program allows young people to grow and develop while gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.
